the fool and the dog (aka the twitter film)

by Micki Krimmel on December 21, 2008 · 1 comment

the twitter film (racing north, chased by tweets, chasing tweets) from svanes on Vimeo.

the film is constructed around a time-lapse journey by car from los angeles to san francisco, while twitter postings from the same day travel across the bottom of the screen. in this sense, the tweets function like a news ticker, transmitting reports from all over the globe.

concurrently, time, as experienced in the film, moves forward on three levels: the actual travel that is recorded on film that can be measured in distance and time, while the twitter postings provide an additional register of the day’s progression.

finally, the movement and rhythm of the tweets mimics the ebb and flow of car traffic during the day. some tweets move into the passing lane to overhaul slower tweets, while other tweets rush at each other from opposing directions.

this is a non-commercial project that was created solely out of my own curiosity and for the amusement of my friends and contacts in the “twitterverse.”

A few of my tweets are in there. Can you spot them?

I’m speaking on a panel. Come join the discussion!

5:30PM – 6:45PM
Panel #3: WHEN THE AUDIENCE TAKES CONTROL
The future of independent film is not in content aggregation, which is quickly becoming commoditized, but in audience aggregation. Sustainability for filmmakers lies directly in the hands of the audience. Direct to audience models have shaken the core of the music industry. But the power of Kevin Kelly’s “1,000 true fans” seems good in theory but where do you start? What are the steps to building an audience around your work and most importantly how do you keep the conversation going?

Discussion Leader: Saskia Wilson-Brown (Current TV)
- Arin Crumley (Four Eyed Monsters)
- M Dot Strange (We Are the Strange)
- Miki Krimmel (expert in social media and online community)
- Alex Johnson (digital media strategist / filmmaker)
- Lance Weiler (The Last Broadcast, Head Trauma)
