    Filmmaker Forum / Mindshare

by Micki Krimmel on September 24, 2008 · 0 comments

Indie filmmakers are increasingly turning to the web to self distribute their work and build audience. No one knows this better than Lance Weiler, the founder of the Workbook Project. Seriously, this guy is on a mission to change the film industry for the benefit of artists and audiences alike. I’m lucky to count Lance among my friends and colleagues and will be speaking on a panel with him this weekend at Film Independent’s Filmmaker Forum.

    NEW TOOLS FOR AUDIENCE BUILDING
New rules need new tools, right? Join filmmakers and new media pioneers as they show you where to start and what you need in order to build an audience—from tools to tips & tricks. Once you have an audience how do you keep them engaged? How can you turn an audience member into an evangelist? Get the answers to these questions and more.

Joining Lance and me on the panel will be my awesome friend Alex Johnson. Speaking of Alex, she and I just joined Mindshare, recently launched by the Workbook Project:

Mindshare is not an agency. It is not a consultancy. It is a paid exchange of ideas.

Mindshare is a select group of experienced, interesting people with niche abilities. They are people that do, and are there to help you do the same. It is a service through which you can access New Media specialists in an immediate, direct and transparent way through a personal system, available anytime.

Whether you are a independent filmmaker or musician, a non-profit, a boutique agency or a PR firm or studio, these specialists can guide you step-by-step through the many fields that comprise the new digital landscape. They are here to help you navigate your journey in this new, exciting and often confusing market. No question is too stupid, no strategy too difficult.

Mindshare is not an agency. It is a service geared toward the individual. Mindshare specialists are independent. They work remotely from various cities and countries. This keeps the service autonomous and agile. There are no overheads and this means fast, competitively priced information.

Mindshare is not a consultancy. It is a utilitarian model with a meritocratic sensibility. Specialists are self-taught and DIY. They charge a uniform base rate and you can pick and choose according to your needs or work with a team. There is no middleman, simply the provision to you of a direct connection to professionals vouched for by the Workbook Project.

Mindshare is a paid exchange of ideas, where knowledge is the commodity. By using the service you support an open source project. 10% of fees are returned to the Workbook Project. These funds are then used to pay WBP users to create content and information that is made available on the site for free under a Creative Commons license. The WBP cultivates people that understand these new categories, and Mindshare helps this community grow and become self-sustaining.

It is a new self-generating financial model that benefits all parties

It is a simple, game-changing concept: People gain knowledge by doing and their skill is rewarded

So if you’re headed to the Filmmaker Forum this weekend, give us a shout! If you’re interested in working with Mindshare or learning more about the team, check it out here.
