RVIP Lounge rides again – SXSW!

by Micki Krimmel on March 10, 2009 · 1 comment

If you haven’t experienced {RV}IP yet, now’s your chance – that is, if you’re lucky enough to be heading to Austin for SXSW. I am! And now for a message from my friend, the beautiful and amazing Kestrin Pantera:

The rumors are true, the {RV}IP Lounge rides again. Austin’s most hilarious karaoke party on wheels is returning for South by Southwest Festival, March 13-20th. Though {RV}IP is eternally Lo-Fi at heart, we’ve made a few technological advancements this year. For those of you who can’t make it out to Texas, we will live-stream interviews, mini-panels, acoustic sets, and epic karaoke performances from the “{RV}IP Media Den” via www.rviplounge.com. All karaoke singers will be entered into a raffle to win a new Intel Netbook (thanks, guys!), and {RV}IP will co-host CauseCast’s Moustache March, outdoor RockBand with GirlGamer, and, as usual, surprise the long, waiting lines of Austin party-goers with our red carpet karaoke. Helmed, as always, by LOUD3R VP Jonathan Grubb and actress/cellist Kestrin Pantera, we won’t necessarily take you right where you want to go, but you’ll always end up where you want to be. For location updates, follow {RV}IP Lounge on Twitter at www.twitter.com/rviplounge.

“‘The RVIP Lounge is the greatest experience you’ll ever have. You may think you’re having a good time in all those trendy clubs and bars downtown, but how many times have you thought to yourself ‘Is this really happening?’ At the RVIP Lounge, the surreal is commonplace.’” – The Los Angeles Times

The Zen of Internet Conferences

by Micki Krimmel on March 15, 2008 · 2 comments

Another year, another case of Laryngitis. As my voice returns to me and I piece the week back together, I have to thank my good friend Lane Becker for giving me the best SXSW advice ever. In the beginning of the festival, I was feeling a little overwhelmed by the whole thing. I’ve got a lot going on right now and I wasn’t sure how to best use my time at SXSW to make the event most productive. Should I be pimping my consulting services? Should I be talking about The Mickipedia Show? Should I be seeking advice for my company idea? And how the hell am I supposed to do any of this while jumping from panel to panel on zero sleep and partying all night? By day two I was already exhausted and for a moment I felt like giving up on the whole thing. Lane put a beer in my hand and brought me back to my senses.

“Micki,” he said. “Everyone you could ever possibly want to talk to is here. And you already know most of them. So just hang out. Have a good time. The rest will come.”

I thought about that for a second. And I realized that not only was he totally right but it was already happening! Every friend I saw and new person I met would inevitably ask, “So what are you up to?” And I would answer them. And they would inevitably respond with something very useful – some had leads or suggested we talk again about possible consultant gigs, some had valuable criticism for my videos and almost everyone had really helpful advice for starting my new company. Of course, I had a few scheduled meetings but outside of those, it all happened organically. I left Austin with pages of notes, piles of business cards and a ton of ideas. And a bunch of new friends to boot.

I’m not the first to say that most value from conferences comes not from the scheduled sessions but from the hallways. And while I always knew what that meant, now I can really say that I get it. Which is good considering how few panels I actually made it to this year. :)

My panel was great, by the way. Many thanks to the panelists and the audience for engaging in such a thoughtful discussion. I look forward to checking out the feedback. I’ll post the audio here once the podcast is available.

Hugs and kisses to all my Austin buddies old and new. Can’t wait till next year!

Oh, and here is a totally unrelated, and hilarious photo from the SocialThing party at SXSW:

Happy couple

Just an idea… Is SXSW so successful because they opened up their platform to other people’s parties?

Come to my SXSW panel!

March 1, 2008

Here we are again – the final week of preparations before Internet Spring Break – I mean South by Southwest Interactive. I was super excited last year because the festival began combining many of the Film and Interactive panels – mashing up the previously separate events into what is really becoming the premiere New Media [...]
