A lot of people don't realize how rich the history or skepticism and atheism is, and this article does a good job.

And Micki, I have to say your cheery videos and social networking is a fantastic marketing for atheism. Keep it up!

Hey there asshole, thanks for visiting. I guess you missed this, from the third paragraph of the article: "As a note of clarification: we've ordered this list chronologically and we use the term "brilliant" to mean "brilliant at their craft" - not just pure brainiacs;-)"

I think it's important to include some pop culture icons who are more accessible than your average snooty intellectual or historical figure on lists like this.

Instead of telling other people what to link to on their (fucking) websites, maybe you can keep your douchebaggery on your own (fucking) website.

I was offended after reading this list, which I first found on brainz.org. Sadly, those idiots don't have a way to contact them on their site, so I'm sending comments or e-mails to sites that copied the list, or have a link to it. I'm doing this to say:

Get rid of this fucking list. Anyone who puts Jodie Foster on a list titled '50 Most Brilliant Atheist of All Time' but leaves off key people that really influenced history such as Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson, should probably be painfully tortured for the crime of active stupidity.

Get this list off your site, or write a good, accurate one with the same name, but by keeping this one your just helping spread the STD(socially transmitted disease) of stupidity,... Help the world become a better place, and get rid of that crap.

It's debatable whether Democritus was an atheist. A "scoffing rejection of assigning to gods the mechanistic operations of nature itself" could describe the difference, say, between the Christian and Muslim conceptions of God's will, or even between a Catholic's and a Neo-Calvinist's.

As for the rest, you'd think atheists almost never get out of the lab. Carnegie's pretty awesome, and Jagger's ok for a dirty old man, but Mark Zuckerberg? Really? What about intellectual heavy hitters like Nietzsche, Marx, Engels, Sartre? Or the guys who really put words into action, like Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Che & Fidel? Committed and effective opponents of religion, these dudes completely changed their societies, built nations and systems that lasted decades (and in some cases continue today). That's gotta count as brilliant, at least as much as making Facebook.
